Oil Tank Vent Cap FAQs
Most oil tank vent caps can be easily unscrewed in an anticlockwise motion, usually. Occasionally, the caps may get stuck due to cold temperature drops or repeated long periods of disuse, which can lead to a build-up of burnt oil around the rims. Don’t fret if this happens – the best way to loosen a glued cap is to apply some chemical lubricant spray like WD40 and use a towel to grip it while it’s still cold and easier to manipulate.
Vent caps are designed to provide an extra layer of protection and security to your oil tank’s ventilation system. They can be fastened tightly with grub or shear screws to ensure no risk of spillages. They neatly slot on top of the tank’s ventilation system and provide an outlet for the excess gases whenever the tank is filled or emptied.
Vent caps are built to last and rarely need to be replaced. Wear-and-tear built up over years of use can eventually degrade the cap, though the most common causes for deterioration in vent caps is severe neglect and general lack of maintenance. Regularly checking your oil and cleaning your tank will keep your vent cap in good condition. All parts of an oil tank are connected, so maintaining them equally will create a healthy, long-lasting storage system!
